MIKE PORTNOY

Michael Portnoy adalah seorang drummer dan backing vocal dari grup band beraliran metal progressive, Dream Theater. Lahir di Long Beach, Amerika pada tahun 20 April 1967 dan dibesarkan di Long Island. Ayah Mike adalah seorang DJ di radio lokal dan membantu Mike untuk menyukai musik pada usia-usia awalnya sebagaimana ditunjukkan Mike bahwa dari koleksi musik ayahnya ia mulai menyukai musik. Mike mengaku mempelajari drum secara otodidak walaupun ia sempat mengambil kelas teori musik pada saat duduk di bangku sekolah menengah. Bahkan ia sempat bermain di band lokal yang bernama Rising Power dan Inner Sanctum yang keduanya sempat meluncurkan album. Namun, Mike meninggalkan Inner Sanctum saat ia mendapatkan beasiswa untuk bersekolah di Berklee College of Music. Disanalah Mike bertemu dengan John Petrucci dan John Myung yang kemudian mereka membentuk sebuah band yang awalnya bernama Majesty. Majesty adalah cikal bakal dari Dream Theater. Mike menikah dengan Marlene yang seorang gitaris dari band wanita bernama Meanstreak. Dari pernikahannya itu Mike dianugerahi dua orang anak yaitu Melody Ruthandrea dan Max John.

Portnoy terkenal dengan keberanian dan skillnya dalam bermain drum. Ia juga telah mendapatlan 23 penghargaan dari Modern Drummer Magazine.

Karir:
Mike pada dasarnya adalah drummer dari Dream Theater, namun pada 8 September bahwa ia akan hengkang dari Dream Theater. Hengkangnya Portnoy dikarenakan adanya perbedaan pendapat dan kesenangan antar anggota. Disamping itu Portnoy juga memiliki beberapa proyek band sampingan diantaranya Liquid Tension, Translantic, Neal Morse, OSI, John Arch. Portnoy juga menjadi pemian drum untuk Avenged Sevenfold selama tur. Dari kiprahnya bersama band-band tersebut, ia telah berhasil meluncurkan beberapa album. Portnoy telah merilis videonya saat bermain drum bersama dengan Dream Theater maupun dengan band-band proyeknya melalui perusahaan rekamannnya sendiri dalam bentuk MP4.
